Sahyog operates under the assumption that what matters most in this life is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriches, empowers, or encourages another human being to emulate your example. Towards this end, Sahyog is an organization dedicated to developing social consciousness and inspiring people to create the type of world that enables all to live with dignity.
Sensibly, their approach involves providing a framework through which volunteers can take part in developing sustainable, community-based initiatives that encourage practical knowledge and the transfer of skills through a learning-by-doing process of education that is of benefit to the rural poor.
Their intention is to partner with host communities to identify a limited number of high-deficit educational and commercial areas that can be improved through the provision of minimal startup capital (using a matching funds model) and informal, non-structured, practical training.
At an organizational level, they commit to working in a close, cooperative relationship with their partners to achieve specific, time-bound, measurable goals that lead to an overall improvement in the quality of life for the members of their host community. It is their belief that the ultimate measure of their success is a host community that has acquired the confidence, the competence, and the capacity to provide a continuation of the services that Sahyog initiates—independent of their involvement.
In on-the-ground practice, their vision and efforts have translated into the development of a computer learning center/PSB youth group/English coaching centre for women and youth—Project Dharamsala—which opened in the summer of 2007. The long-term goal of this project is to create an environment in which the skills and knowledge of the community and their volunteers are partnered and applied to the development of a self-sustaining, replicable model that is of genuine benefit to the rural poor of Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), India.
So if you are comfortable with making mistakes so as to learn humility, curiosity, the courage to take risks, to innovate, and are willing to improvise and to constantly experiment, then join them as they work to create a world that is more than tomorrow.
