This is the motto of the Hope Education Centre (HEC), an organisation founded by two young Tibetans, for Tibetans.
It articulates our belief that every individual can make a difference and create a better world.
There are thousands of Tibetans living in India. Many of them don't speak, read or write English. In the modern world English has become a global language and pays a vital role in our daily life.
With the flame of hope in our hearts, HEC opened its doors on May 8 2007. This centre will help Tibetans to become educated in English so that their dreams will come true and hopes will be fulfilled.
It is their hope that they can provide a different approach to education than other areas schools, filling a void in the educational opportunities available in the community.
How They Work
HEC has more then 150 students, comprising of laymen, laywomen, monks and nuns. They provide a variety of class options for our students.
Every weekday they hold the following classes: Entry level, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and our Conversation class.
All of the students are hardworking and dedicated because they are adults and understand the importance of education.
HEC limits its classes to 15 students. This helps our students to get the attention of their teachers, both in the classroom and in the feedback on their daily homework.
Their goal is to keep quality over quantity.
Almost 80% of the teachers in McLeod Ganj are volunteers that stay for only short periods of time (often 3 weeks or less). To combat this, most of the classes our given by Kusang and Chundak, the two founders of HEC.
Especially for beginner students learning English is difficult. It helps them to have Tibetan speaking teachers. For the intermediate and advanced students English speaking teachers are helpful to learn the language more quickly.
To keep a consistency in the classes and for our students, they ask the classroom teachers to commit to a minimum stay of 2 months. For volunteers who can only stay for a short time, our conversation class allows for English speakers to drop in whenever they can.
Since Hope Education Center opened its doors, we have struggled to build a strong foundation for our group.Because our education is free of charge for our students, we rely on donations. We kindly ask our students to donate money, but most of them don't have the recourses to do so.
We currently lack a consistent source of income, and are always in need of people to volunteer, both in our classroom and in our office.
Therefore, we humbly request your support.
Donations help us to pay rent, to buy classroom supplies and to buy the office equipment we lack.
We could also use your help after you leave!
Some volunteers have offered to raise money in their home countries through various projects.
If this is an option for you, it will be greatly appreciated.
We are very thankful to all our volunteers who dedicate their valuable time to this special cause.
