Opening Day
If you are not a “Sox” fan, today may be just any day of the year. But to the born and bread Red Sox fan, this is the one day every year when one reflects past and future. Childhood dreams of a boy's first memories of baseball. For a kid, playing baseball was so many things. It had a smell … the cut grass and the inside of you grove when you stuck your face in it or bit the corner. It had a taste that was bubble gum. Not just any bubble gum but the kind that came in wax packages of baseball cards. Let’s not talk about the collector's dreams used as “engine” noise makers in the spokes of bike wheels. Opening day at the little league field brought a chance to be a little like stars of the time. Make a "great" catch (make any catch). Pushing and shoving as your favorite player's number was given out by your little league coach before the first game. At Fenway 40 yrs ago today, names that were announced that year would become legend. Yaz, Petrocelli, Tony C…This was the year of the impossible dream. Years later kids would circle around the record player to listen to the album…The Impossible Dream. Triumphant songs with clips of an announcer shouting all the moments. Yes…Sox fans are a special breed…we know loss. Stunning turn of events…and redeeming victory so sweet it just brings a smile…. Today brings hope of something new and something old, of a simple life, ...of a athletic display that only the best brings…..Opening day at Fenway……play ball.
