How it happened
On December 3, 1996 I went to see a band called Poi Dog Pondering at the Vic Theater in Chicago. I knew little of the group other than the fact they had become the darling of WXRT-FM and were getting significant air play on Chicago's most respected alternative station. The house was packed, the lights dimmed and two hours later I spilled out into the frigid night air on Sheffield Ave a sweaty mess. "What did I just see?" I asked my friend Duck. His reply was pure: "Poi my friend...you just experienced Poi." That evening, Frank Orrall and Poi Dog Pondering rocked the Vic with an explosion of funk, folk, soul and house music combined with a cornucopia of visual art that instantly won my allegiance. I have been a devoted PdP fan since.
What others have to say (Centerstage)
Poi Dog Pondering (PdP) is the celebrated musical ensemble renowned for their joyous live performances, large-scale productions featuring a host of musical/visual collaborators, and lush recordings. PdP is a self-sustained band, record label, and recording studio. In an era when many bands are downsizing to survive and narrowing their sound to find a commercial niche in an increasingly formatted music marketplace, PdPs sound is expansive -- combining elements of pop, rock, funk, house. acoustronic atmospheres, and soul into a blend that is distinctly their own.
What others have to say (NewBeats)
Listening to Poi Dog Pondering and one can't help think that if they had arrived five years later in the mid '90s, they might have been on the same league as Blues Traveler, Rustic Root, and Dave Matthews Band. Like those two bands, Poi Dog Pondering drew on the jazzy freeform style of roots music by blending rock, folk, and world music. The material on this new compilation draw from material recorded during their residency in Austin, Texas, and features two previously unreleased tracks. Poi Dog Pondering is musically uplifting ("The Hardest Thing," "Pulling Touch") and down home (the Stax-influenced "Be The One," "Thanksgiving") as it is lyrically idealistic (courtesy of principal songwriter Frank Orral, who also pens the liner notes). It's hard not to get be affected by the buoyant music: the fluid guitar playing brings a scintillating groove and the violin adds a touch of class and eloquence. Don't let the band's moniker turn you away from thisthis is heartfelt bohemian music that tugs the heartstrings and soul.
What others have to say (ChicagoGigs)
Poi Dog is one of the best and most successful independent acts out there and based on In Seed Comes Fruit it is easy to understand why. Mr. Orrall and company are very skillful at melding seemingly unrelated sounds into music that is at once unique and accessible. Anyone who likes great players, singers, and beats will find something to like here, something new yet strangely familiar. Poi Dog Pondering’s balance of art and commercial success is a model for all artists to shoot for. Expect them to be one of the top dogs in the biz for some time to come.

Jolter, I'll never forget that night.  And as I listen to PdP in the background as part of my usual morning routine, I'm glad you were at my side when we discovered them.  - duck.
