The Cowboy Chautauqua Company
About the Business
We think the world of performing arts lost something when the chautauqua movement died out some three quarters of a century ago. Back then when there was no other entertainment venue to speak of, the chautauqua stage shows were important social instruments - not only of information, but of education in that they brought the more advanced culture of the eastern cities to the rest of the nation. Some of the best entertainers in American joined these traveling road shows and became a part of the the chautauqua circuit. Radio and motion pictures killed them off . . . but neither of these media can replace the experience of having seen a performance in person. The Cowboy Chautauqua Company is somewhat of a throw-back . . . a trip in the the past where the entertainer stood on stage in front of live audiences. We draw our performers from a pool of enterainers who have agreed to work with us, and they are to a man seasoned veterans of the stage. Our shows are in one sense old timey, just as they were back then, but we don't just do traditional music and poetry. Most of the instruments we use (guitars, bass, fiddle, mandolin, and the like) are acoustic . . . and many of the performances are from original works by our entertainers. Our shows are not tailored for any particular age group, but there's a certain amount of nostalgia in them that appeals to mature audiences. We feature enough modern pieces (performances) to keep younger crowds interested (although our shows are not a place for young children). We don't do off-color or bawdy humor in our shows (you'll have to catch us later for that), and we stay fairly mainstream with our content. In other words, we're not likely to embarrass you, but we'll sure entertain you. Finding a good rhythm is important to our shows. They move along quickly, and the tempo of the show is upbeat, even when we're doing ballads and poems. It's hard to explain, since it's something you must experience to understand . . . but the show has a rhythm that carries you along with it. We work hard at keeping it that way.
