  • China Doll Club - Beijing
Clubbers and night cats in Beijing not only shake their booties to the hottest beats at the new ChinaDoll club (http://www.clubchinadoll.com/), they are also surrounded by work from some of China's best contemporary artists. Founded by award-winning Chinese actress/producer Ai Wan and club designer Wu Ying, ChinaDoll was conceived and designed via their studio E.P.I.C. Design where the original club first opened in Beijing at the end of 2006.Relocated now to the main strip in Sanlitun, the new club is prominently located on the top floor of the '3.3' plaza building. The good news for party-goers is that this venue is three times bigger, comprising a lounge, dancefloor and eight VIP rooms. With their motto The Art of Play', the interior of ChinaDoll takes art out of the gallery and into the club. The overall theme of the interior revolves around 'The Kiss' with passion and sensuality taking centre stage. The work of six contemporary chinese artists is integrated into the interior, custom made installations and furniture, depicting for example sexy female forms, Chinese dolls or modern Chinese love lives. A glossy backdrop of lightboxes adorned with abstracted fashion photography references the brush strokes and vivid colours of chinese water colours. When illuminated, it creates an electric atmosphere making ChinaDoll a lolly shop for the eyes and an amusement park for the senses. - Jeanne TanSeen a new club/bar we should know about? • Munetsugu Hall
Norihiko Dan (http://www.dan-n.co.jp/projects/munemune/m-hall-E.html) born in 1956 in the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan is the designer of the beautiful Munetsugu Hall (http://www.munetsuguhall.com/), completed in 2007 in Naka Ward, Nagoya, Japan. It is a privately-funded concert hall that continues the age-old but almost-dead tradition of wealthy arts patrons initiating and financing the creation of art spaces. Fluid, white wall shapes are the distinctive feature of Munetsugu Halls main performance space. The walls bring to mind artistic sweep marks left by a gigantic builder who in his boredom doodled in his mortar tray with a massive trowel and then let the shapes solidify.Norihiko Dan has won several architecture awards in Japan and Taiwan including the Distinguished Architect Award of the Japanese Institute of Architecture and the ARCADIA Award (http://www.aca-13.com/) Gold Medal in 2007. His work has been part of exhibitions in Japan, Taiwan, USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Italy and the UK. In addition to being a respected architect and educator, Norihiko Dan is also an architecture historian and writes novels and screenplays.Munetsugu Halls generous benefactor is Tokuji Munetsugu who with his wife Naomi made a fortune in the restaurants business. Their company Ichibanya Co. Ltd. (based in Aichi, Japan) operates more than 1,000 curry and pasta restaurants under the names Curry House CoCo Ichibanya and Pasta de Coco. Munetsugu spent two billion yen to build the 310-seat concert hall. He has also set up a nonprofit organization to support welfare, sports and arts activities. - Tuija Seipell
  • Beck - 'Modern Guilt'
Joining together two modern musical madmen like Beck and Danger Mouse seems almost dangerous, like it could easily descend into a battle of two outrageous imaginations. Instead, Modern Guilt (http://www.modernguilt.com/) comes off like a sonic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, where the different elements meld together so simply and naturally that it defies the incomprehensible bent of their partnership. Beck and his music have always belonged in the sixties and Danger Mouses captures this in a twisted dream state. You only need to taste 'Modern Guilt' once before youre stuck in its kaleidoscopic rapture. - Matt Shea
  • Naomi Campbell - V Magazine
If all the world is a stage, then Naomi Campbell is the actress, director and producer. Not one to shy away from limelight, this iconic supermodel has (despite some misbehaviour) proved she has stood the test of time with this inspired shoot (http://www.fashion-ation.net) by Mario Sorrenti for V Magazine.
  • Critter Quest, San Fran
To get people connected with the San Francisco Zoo, BBDO West in SF created a multi-media campaign called "Critter Quest".People stand in front of a series of local bus shelters and postings at the zoo, which are playfully adorned with everything from horns to butterfly wings and oversized ears. The copy suggests having a friend take a picture of you in front of the bus shelter/postings, and then instructs you to load on the OurSFZoo website. (http://www.oursfzoo.org/) If youre creative enough, your image might end up in a print ad for the San Fran Zoos attempt to reconnect with locals and visitors. Thousands have submitted photos so far were interested in seeing how creative people will get. - Andrew J Weiner

  • Behind the Scenes at Download 2008 Los Angeles: Yeasayer

This past Sunday, July 20, throngs of music-hungry fans converged on Los Angeles' Gibson Ampitheatre for Download 2008 to have their craving satiated by sets from Tapes N' Tapes, Datarock, Ghostland Observatory, Gang of Four, and the Jesus and Mary Chain, among others. SPIN.com's Peter Gaston sat down with Brooklyn bohemians Yeasayer; watch video of Peter catching up with the uber-hyped outfit about the rigors of performing under oppressive heat, getting into imagined MC battles with Q-Tip on New York's subways, and being baffled by snoozing front-row fans.

  • Dr. Dre's 'Detox' Given Another Tentative Release Date

Cue the Chinese Democracy jokes: In a recent interview with USA Today, Dr. Dre claimed that his long-gestating follow up to the seven-times platinum 2001, Detox, could be released by the end of 2008. "I'm just now -- over the last couple of months -- starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it," Dre told the paper in his first interview in several months. "In a perfect world, I'm shooting for a November or December release." Detox is said to rely heavily on live drum instrumentation, as well as feature guest spots by Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Nas, among others.

Between the countless delays due to Dre's further sonic tinkering and the fact that his last release, 2001, actually came out in 1999 (take that, date-relevant title accuracy), it's safe to say that Detox is one of the most anxiously awaited releases on anybody's calendar. But what about those records that aren't so heavily clamored for -- be they reunions nobody asked for, or marginal releases further marginalized in release-date limbo? We've compiled a list of some of the least-anticipated releases, and we'll show it to you in December -- we promise (kidding!).

Check out our picks on page 2.

    <!--pagebreak-->

    1. Courtney Love, Nobody's Daughter
The Linda Perry-assisted follow-up to 2004's ironically titled (we presume -- you never know with Courtney) America's Sweetheart has been hampered by rehab stints, rumors of scrapped sessions, and (alleged) run-ins with Ryan Adams. Daughter could very well be released in 2008, and early advances of the record have been praised as a "masterpiece" by such esteemed critics as… Fox News?!?! We'd say "Stick to what you do best, Courtney," but we're having trouble remembering what exactly that is.

    2. Fonzworth Bentley, C.O.L.O.U.R.S.
So, let us get this straight: Diddy's former "personal assistant," who markets his own line of umbrellas and is currently the host of an MTV reality show, From G's to Gents, has his own hip-hop record coming out. And his record company's delayed its release? We can't understand why.

    3. Nicole Scherzinger, Her Name is Nicole
Yes, Scherzinger has tasted success via her membership in the near-ubiquitous girl group Pussycat Dolls, but her way-too-obviously-titled solo debut hasn't had very much luck. Four singles from the record have failed to make a dent critically or commercially -- and the album hasn't even been released yet. As the record has been delayed again for the time being (with promises of a future release by Scherzinger herself), we're starting to wonder if anybody aside from Nicole and her fellow pussycat prowlers are looking forward to it.

    4. Fenix TX, TBD
Blink-181? Teal Day? Spew Found Glory? Truth be told, we probably exercised more creative muscles coming up with those lame put-downs than '90s pop-punk also-rans Fenix TX did during their mercifully short first run. The phonetically challenged trapped adolescents reunited in 2004 and announced plans to record a follow-up to the band's swan song, 2001's Lechuza, back in 2006. Two years have passed since; maybe the band has encountered a creative impasse -- or, more likely, they're just busy playing video games or something.

    5. Shaquille O'Neal, Shaquille O'Neal Presents His Superfriends, Vol. 1
The bad idea of bad ideas, Shaq's fifth -- wait, fifth? -- rap-fest was slated for release all the way back in 2001, but has been lost in the ether since. While Shaq's never been known for his rapping skills (or his free throws, for that matter), Superfriends, Vol. 1 was set to feature an esteemed set of guest performers, including Mos Def, ?uestlove, Black Thought of the Roots, and even, fittingly, Dr. Dre. Forget Detox, Dre -- rush this one to record stores immediately.

  • Behind the Scenes at Download 2008 Los Angeles: De Novo Dahl

This past Sunday, July 20, throngs of music-hungry fans converged on Los Angeles' Gibson Ampitheatre for Download 2008 to have their craving satiated by sets from Tapes N' Tapes, Datarock, Ghostland Observatory, Gang of Four, and the Jesus and Mary Chain, among others. SPIN.com's Peter Gaston sat down with vocalist/guitarist Joel Dahl and bassist Keith Lowen of indie-pop eccentrics De Novo Dahl; watch video of Peter catching up with the duo about noxious costume smells, the pros and cons of being signed to a metal label, and a certain dance-rock band whose mothers aren't too happy with them.

(We'll give you a hint: check out their name.)
