Voter Street Team

By Celeste Fraser Delgado/MOLI

If it works for indie hip-hop, why not democracy too?

MTV has been "rocking the vote" for longer than most of its viewers have been alive (well, okay, 15 or so years). Now the music network is taking a trick from indie hip-hop and promoting — I mean covering — the 2008 presidential elections with "street teams."

Thanks to a hefty grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, MTV has hired 51 "citizen journalists" to ferret out stories of interest to young people that are not being covered by the grown-up media.

Those stories will be showing up on MTV's social networking-with-a-conscience site Think MTV (where you can also see tiny pics and mini-profiles of each of the street team members). They'll also be showing up on subscribers' mobile phones, the Associated Press's Online Video Network, and various MTV channels.

Now you can look forward to a little realpolitick between your reruns of Real World.

Hmm ... I suspect something every time a big corp uses an indie concept. How can people who are paid by MTV be "citizen journalists". Curious to see what happens in the editing room to their footage. xo QJ
