Easy Way to Save a Life
Your actions can help stop the spread of tuberculosis
That sounds like a lot, but according to the Stop TB Partnership, an international network of more than 400 organizations and experts, it'll take $56.1 billion over the next ten years to stamp out what the bill's sponsor, Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) calls, "the greatest curable infectious killer on the planet."
The World Health Organization estimates that every year more than eight million people develop active TB, and two million people die. It gets worse: TB and HIV form what GlobalHealthReporting.org calls a "lethal combination." TB is the leading cause of death worldwide for people who are HIV-positive. In Africa, the region with the highest incidence of both diseases, HIV is the "single most important factor" behind the spread of TB.
The good news: There's a cheap and effective way to treat TB and stop it from spreading. With proper funding, the Stop TB Partnership claims that the spread of TB can be cut in half and 14 million lives can be saved by 2015. The Global TB Control Bill is a step in the right direction. You can help make sure the bill becomes law by writing to your representative. If you'd like to chip in yourself, make a cash donation to the Stop TB Partnership. A full course of treatment for one TB patient costs less than 20 bucks. Saving a life doesn't get much simpler.
