In Jail in Dubai

By Richard Pachter/MOLI

"Someone in my circle is in trouble"

It was an ominous message, coming from someone specializing in things "ominous," though usually fictional ones.

Warren Ellis, brilliant and curmudgeonly UK-based writer, informed subscribers to his BAD SIGNAL e-mail Tuesday, January 29, that:

"The partner (Cat Le-Huy) of designer and COILHOUSE co-creator Mildred Vo has been arrested in Dubai for carrying melatonin. This, apparently, gave them the excuse to declare without testing that a few fragments of dirt in the bottom of his bag were hashish. Everyone's hoping that they'll be forced to release him in another seven days but the Dubai authorities, as you might expect, are behaving like monsters."

Details are here.

Ellis followed a few days later: "Update on the Dubai situation (it's not good)."

As of this writing, Cat Le-Huy is still incarcerated in Dubai. An online petition directed at Dubai's ruler is here.

For what it's worth, an opposing viewpoint on Dubai's incarceration of travelers is here.

Last year in Dubai, music producer Dallas Austin was detained and arrested for possession of cocaine, then tried, sentenced, and pardoned (after intercession by some very heavy friends).

I have made a YOUTUBE PROTEST SONG to highlight Cat Le-Huy's case. He sits opposite me at work. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M8I8ydkq0g Matt McFaul

Well - you shouldn't be traveling with Pot or cocaine, but I didn't realize melatonin was bad - wow. Isn't that a vitamin you can get that helps you relax and sleep?
