Suit Yourself Part II

By Cathay Che/MOLI

The hunt for the perfect suitcase continues

Yesterday I offered some seasoned-traveler advice about the best suitcases. The gift guide continues:

Samsonite Black Label: Remember the TV commercials with the sumo wrestlers throwing Samsonite suitcases around to make the point that they were indestructible? Well, they still are, but they're fashionable too. Following the success of the Marc Newson rolly, Samsonite Black Label (Samsonite's high-end label) has introduced an Alexander McQueen rolly shaped like an anorexic chest cavity. There's also one shaped like a tortoise shell. I think the least expensive is about $750, but they still come with the pedigree of the LIFETIME guarantee.

Burton: The surf/snowboarding brands (Roxy, Quiksilver, Billabong, Volcom, Hurley, etc.) have in recent years figured out that their demo travels and therefore wants cute, affordable, rugged luggage. Though in many ways I will always be a Roxy girl (a holdover identity and residual self-image since I was 13), I have to give it to Burton for coming up with some of the most delicious suitcases of the season. I especially like the Sub Wheelie (under $200!). It's not a delicate bag, but a big-haul, check-in-only bag for all your snowboarding gear. In a collaboration with the Warhol Foundation (they are bigger media whores than Andy ever was), the Warhol Wheelie Sub should appeal to even the most snobbish urbanite.

Hello Kitty: It's not just for kids anymore: The HK luxury brand now offers real diamond jewelry, $500 leather handbags, and cashmere sweaters emblazoned with the signature Japanese feline's irresistible face (which someone in the Freemasons once said represents a perfect mathematical equation). Some of the suitcases are really spectacular, though there's a pretty big gap between the $38 ones and the one I would recommend: a $200 pimped-out pink hard case, with Hello Kitty hangars and shoe bags inside. Luckily the official website has the whole range.
