New Year's Eve Blowouts

By Cathay Che/MOLI

If money is no object, make it a New Year's you'll never forget

Cancun, New Orleans, Daytona: These are places you can still book for New Year's Eve, if you're on a budget. But of course, if you're really looking for a deal, pick someplace you can drive to or a spot where a friend or family member might be willing to loan you a house or apartment they have vacated for their holiday travels.

If, however, you're bucking the trend of the financial downward slide and you're having a bonanza bonus year, forget Las Vegas, New York, or Miami and think global. Decadence can reach new heights for you on other less traveled or unexplored continents.

Tinstswalo Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park, South Africa: Since this luxury, 16-bungalow villa property (the beautiful decor evokes the film Out of Africa) is inside a game preserve, don't be surprised if the animals aren't afraid of you (is that an elephant drinking out of my plunge pool?!). Twice daily you'll go out in the stealthy convertible Range Rover to catch glimpses of the Big Five, and in between you'll have chef-prepared picnics spread out on Kashmir carpets (oh, so tough). You may no longer be top of the food chain here, but you'll sure feel like top dog.

Burj Al Arab, Dubai: This place makes Las Vegas look like a kiddie-park ride and sets a new bar on a lifestyle of excess. Burj Al Arab, designed to look like a billowing sail, is the tallest hotel building in the world at 1,053 feet. The decor in these 202 enormous suites with private dining areas and 42-inch plasma TVs is garish, yes, but the views out over the blue waters are stunning. Complain about anything not up to snuff to your 24-hour butler, or just have him set up your desert safari or hot-air ballooning afternoons.

I would love to travel to Dubai. I have heard so many good things about it.
