If you watch 15 minutes of CNN in the U.S., then watch 15 minutes of BBC News, it feels like America is not just another country, but its own isolated planet. The U.S. loves our precious protected borders so much, we rarely get news about the world beyond them – oil spills closing beaches, city riots, unstable political regimes, airport chaos, strikes, floods, fires. If not just as a curious and conscious world citizen, most definitely as a traveler, you need this info. I will make an effort each week to list keyword searches. If you see one for an area you are planning to visit, just type it in Google and go. And since I'm not perfect, you could always do a search on the area you plan to visit on the
BBC World website or the
Guardian UK website.
