Season's Gadgets
The best PCs for all the geeks in your life
For the geek on the go
The lightweight laptop of the moment is the Eee PC (rhymes with "Wii") from the Taiwanese electronics company ASUS. Weighing in at two pounds and $399, it lacks a hard drive (it has 4GB of flash memory) and Windows (it runs on Linux). But three USB ports and a memory card slot provide some flexibility, and posters at the EeeUser Forum have figured out how to make it run Windows XP and even Apple's OSX.
For the green geek
Despite its resemblance to a VCR from 1992, Lenovo's new A61e PC is generating enough environmental buzz to make Al Gore jealous. Not only is it made of "up to 90 percent" recycled and reusable materials, but it exceeds the new Energy Star 4.0 standards and has an 85 percent efficient power supply. It can draw power from an optional solar panel, which is really useful if your office happens to be outdoors.
For the design geek
Back in 1998, iMac made the computer a design statement, with its colorful, translucent, all-in-one aesthetic. Every version since has been smaller. The current iMac is thinner than most flat-screen televisions and has powerful dual-core Intel processors and a generous-size monitor. The brushed aluminum case lacks the old color but adds class.
