Who's Your MVP?

By Donnell Alexander/MOLI

Garnett, Paul, James, and Bryant are the forerunners

When I my book tour hits Seattle on Saturday, it'll have good company. Scheduled to join us at the the after-party are Gary Payton, Sam Perkins and Jerome Kersey. I'm not sure what these ballers have to do with the book that I co-authored, aside from the fact that Payton, Shaq and Nick Van Exel appear in Bruce Williams' story.

Very good, not great company. These '90s guys are terrific players, but none of them got to the point where they earned sizable NBA MVP vote counts. Four players are realistically contesting for the 208 title: Chris Paul, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James and — that guy I constantly fawn over — Kobe Bryant.

Believe it or not, the non-Lakers options are viable candidates. James is having a typically heroic season. He can be as physically awe-inspiring as Bryant. Regardless, it feels too soon for an MVP shot. And the Cavs aren't especially good. I bet he'll be in a Knick uniform when he's finally voted MVP.

Kevin Garnett will always be a personal favorite, just for his awesome-jock -personality. If you're black and under 40 — or maybe if you're not — KG is your Brett Fakvre. Still, Garnett's MVP-status is almost unfairly diminished by the powerful supporting cast he has in Boston. (BTW, Boston had better look out for Washington and Gilbert Arenas if they happen to meet in the playoffs.
