Fats Make a Comeback
Gary Taubes says everything you know about diet is wrong
Scotch that: Worse than making no progress, this week I gained two pounds. And now it can be told: I am so, so very hungry.
The good news is I can go express my unhappiness in a huge ham sandwich.
Have you ever walked away from someone or something, thinking you'd never
need them or it again? I sure have: jobs, girlfriends, landlords, a whole bunch of stuff. And more than my memory cares to maintain, I've had to come back, humbled and hoping that the wishfully departed would not hold a grudge.
We all better hope fat is gelatinous jolly, rather than the vengeful fat of Jabba the Hut and other fat bastards. Because apparently we're going to need it.
In Gary Taubes' Good Calories, Bad Calories, not only do certain kinds of fat make a comeback, but exercise takes a hit when taken in and of itself. The calorie counting that has been pressed into our psyches for three decades has no credibility in the wake of Good Calories, Bad Calories. Ready, set, butter your toast!
Taubes writes: "[D]espite the depth and certainty of our faith that saturated fat is the nutritional bane of our lives and that obesity is caused by overeating and sedentary behavior, there has always been copious evidence to suggest that those assumptions are incorrect."
