Savings Account: Brain Job

By Richard Pachter/MOLI

Preprogram your brain for your job search

Last time, we talked about a new book with great career advice. This time, let's get into the nitty-gritty of job seeking with a few more recommendations.

Dunno about you, but every time I've embarked upon a GigQuest, I started by programming my brain for the search for scanning a few books on the subject.

What Color Is Your Parachute by Richard Bolles is a classic. Updated every year or so, it's an excellent general resource on job searches and associated tasks. But I like Knock ‘em Dead by Martin Yale even better. Sweaty Palms by H. Anthony Medley is a great book on interviews and Negotiating Your Salary: How To Make $1,000 A Minute by Jack Chapman is another fantastic resource for interview preparation.

In addition to recommending these books, here are a few other suggestions: If there are any websites devoted to your area of interest or profession, visit them regularly. Now is the time to network your ass off, so gently and politely get in touch with just about everyone you know either by phone, e-mail or in person. But be cool; you don't want to appear overly needy or desperate (even if you are). Use any connections you've made here on MOLI, as well as on Linkedin and other networking sites.
