Scalability for Survival
Cheap beer! And other Savings Account tips
It's rare these days for anyone to have the same job for an entire career. I've seen references, in fact, to workers holding six or seven different gigs over the course of their lives, and I'm sure the figure can be higher for some people. Even professionals and business owners experience changes in direction — and fortune.
I've gone through a few career shifts myself, and learned the importance of flexibility. Not just physically (though that's a very good idea, too), but financially.
The term "scalability" is tech talk for a system's ability to accommodate changes in size or amount. If the impending economic downturn threatens your current lifestyle, I suggest that you devise a way NOW to make your life scalable, too. It doesn't have to be really complicated or traumatic either.
For example, a few years back, I was "between opportunities," and discovered the best cheap beer. (Yeah, beer isn't a necessity, though it's a nice accompaniment to a meal.)
After trying several brands, I discovered that Busch, essentially a less expensive version of Budweiser, was quite drinkable, at least to me. (Your mileage may vary.) I'd purchase a 12-pack for around six bucks, and it would last a couple of weeks (I'm a cheap date), so it was a good deal. In fact, my in-laws assumed that it was my favorite brand, so they gave me a 12-pack for my birthday! I'd've preferred Molson Ale, but they meant well!
