Lynx

By Richard Pachter/MOLI

Let's get a bit more specific about links on your blog

Last time, we covered the value of linking as a tool to promote your blog. Now let's get a bit more specific. But first ...

This is very important: Make sure the quality of your blog is very good — even great — but at the very least, unique and interesting. That's really necessary. If you're going to the trouble and expending the energy to promote it, and asking others to link to it and, by implication, vouch for what you're doing, make damned sure that it doesn't suck. And if your blog isn't fantastic, don't bother. Please. The world does not need any more mediocrity.

Still with me? Good. What the world does need is more great, interesting, and insightful work. Are you up to it? Then go for it.

Here's how one blogger got the ball rolling — without intending to!

A pal of mine was a regular visitor to a sports blog devoted to his favorite team. The slant, though, was on humor with a twist. It resonated with him, too, so he began commenting on the postings — with a similar twist. After a few weeks, the sports blogger left a message in the comments section for my pal to get in touch. They e-mailed back and forth, and my bud was invited to become a contributor. And he did!

It's not unknown for comment-makers, in fact, to attract and cultivate their own followings. I'd suggest using a name other than your own, like a nickname or descriptive handle, or even something similar to the name of your blog. But that's up to you. As I mentioned last time, different blogs have different rules, so always observe the proper etiquette and be a good guest (because that's what you are!)
