The End?

By Richard Pachter/MOLI

How do you prepare for the end? Seize the time

I'm a glass half-full kind of guy, a positive person, even when things kind of suck. On tough days, I believe that the best remedy for adversity is action. And I get out of bed every morning hoping for the best. So I don't want anyone to think that I'm depressed or bummed out when I ask: What if the world ended?

I considered this the other day, sparked by a book I'd encountered that posited the elimination of humanity on earth by an extraterrestrial intelligence. No offense intended! They just needed to get rid of us in the same way that we rid a house of bugs ... like red ants. In the tale, the alien race attacked us with a relativistic bomb, which travels at just under the speed of light and is undetectable and instantaneous. No time to prepare. Whoop! There it is. And there you're not.

While that thought still bounced around my brain, I came upon a story from the Associated Press about a black hole in a "death star galaxy" that blasted a neighboring galaxy with a deadly jet of radiation and energy. It was relatively random, as far as the scientists could determine. But what if it had happened to our galaxy? To our solar system? To earth?

The high-energy particles and radiation would destroy the protective ozone layer and compress the protective magnetosphere, according to one of the scientists. Then the sun and the jet would bombard the planet with the high-energy particles.
