eXtreme Croquet

By Juliana Luecking/MOLI

Six mallets and nine wickets, and your holiday goes wack

I found a brand new croquet set on Craigslist for 10 bucks last night, because summer is coming, and I just got word about eXtreme Croquet. Instead of setting up a figure eight of wickets on a flat, grassy knoll, the anarchist in me and my peeps will dig into the woods, ravines, and drainage basins if we're out in the country somewhere, and use obstacles like trash cans, parked cars, and gutters if we're in town.

Can't you picture it? This is how to set up play, according to the Connecticut eXtreme Croquet Society. They use 0.5-inch steel pipe to form their wickets — some of them double wickets — so that, as the website says, "It's possible to slam balls into them with amazing strength and get great caroms."

Still can't picture it? Maybe you're not sure your refined family croquet game can take eXtreme pressure? Get ready for some ridiculous and bizarre videos. Here's a bunch of beer-drinking wacky guys demonstrating their special mallet, nicknamed "The Chuckie". Actually, here's an entire wedge-mallet gallery, including materials like polycarbonate, aluminum, and nylon.

On the international scene, these German guys use the theme from Patton with shots of their eXtreme croquet camping trip (it's all funny, but the action starts around 02:12). And I'm not sure what rules they're following, but these four boys in the suburbs make it clear they want nothing to do with rules.

Don't try this at the beach, especially not if you're wearing a Speedo brief — it's just embarrassing. But do try it out with your friends and fam this year. Ridiculous fun, I'm sure.

Perhaps you already play?

Tell those kids to "play nice." The combo of mallets and beer sounds like a closed head injury waiting to happen...!
