Who Are You, Really?
Do you stand out in a crowd?
(By the way, since you might be in a crowd right now, is the person next to you wearing deodorant? I hope so. Is she from your hometown? Maybe she's as attracted to you as you are to her? Does that guy in the red jacket go to the same nightclubs as you? He looks like someone you knew at school, doesn't he? Are these people wealthier than you, or poorer? Are they tolerant or judgmental, creative or in a rut? You look around and wonder: Hey, have I slept with anyone in this crowd?)
The folks near you seem okay, and you shift your weight as you wait, and there's a quiet buzz around you. You shuffle to the left to get a better view, and wait some more. Finally, the event begins, and the crowd quiets down. Something up ahead starts to happen. There's a message. Or maybe it's a feat, or a breakthrough. Any which way, before you know it, everyone is cheering. Is it a message, a feat, or a breakthrough? No, perhaps it's a just a damn game show (maybe you're in the studio audience, and people are encouraging The Price Is Right's worst player ever as Bob Barker sits down on the set in disbelief).
It doesn't matter what it is. Everyone around you sees what you see, and hears what you're hearing. What matters is that for this sublime time, a group of people are all digging the same thing. And because it feels so good to be in a crowd of people who all share an excitement, you start making some noise. The first sound is like a yelp of a baby fox, and it is a little embarrassing, but then you clear your voice and let out a hoot. Hoot-hoot!
