Big City Blues

By Theo Kogan/MOLI

THEOlogy offers resources for the small fish in the big pond

HELP ME THEO!

In a few months I will be moving to a major city on the coast after living in Midwest America for the last 10 years. I am at a loss as to how to get involved with the city, meet cool people to be in bands with, or meet someone special. I used to have no problem with this kind of stuff, but time has passed and it's a whole new world. What can I do to jump into life when I finally get there?

Love you, love you, love you!!!!!

— Movin' On Up

Dearest Movin' On Up,

Big fish in a small pond to little fish in a big pond, I totally get it. Don't panic! The beauty of moving to a new place is that you can be whomever you want. If you don't have any history there it can be really thrilling to start over where no one knows you. You can tell stories that your old friends have heard 100 times. You can explore and take chances. This is a gift for you. You could start wearing totally different clothes, dye your hair a new color, and get it cut. You could give yourself a nickname you always wanted. Imagine that you are in a witness protection program and create a new persona and character for yourself!

This is not to say that you aren't fabulous as who you are already, I am sure you are, but it is really exciting to start over. Allow this new start to give you confidence. Try to look at it with a sense of adventure and fun, fun, fun!

In the case of meeting people, finding bands to play with, and such, start with your new city's local papers. This would be the kind that has listings of shows, clubs, personals, wanted sections, places to eat, art, nightlife events — whatever you are interested in. Find a music store and look on the bulletin boards for bands wanting people to play with. Go to the "cool" coffee spot and check those bulletin boards. Check out vintage stores, record stores; come on girl, you can do it!

Every time I have moved - I have always thought of it as an adventure and very exciting. Change is good and invigorating!

This is great advice. When I lived in NY, so many of my friends had reinvented themselves, with names like Tinuviel, Silver, Jana (ahem), etc.
