Oprah + Obama = Amazing

By Juliana Luecking/MOLI

O, wouldn't you be smiling if you were Barack?

Is it just me, or did Oprah's speech on Sunday, to 29,000 South Carolinians totally knock your socks off? Last night I sat down at my computer to scan the news and found myself sitting back for 20 minutes to watch the video of her entire speech in the University of South Carolina's football stadium.

You know, once upon a time Oprah Winfrey took me aside and said, "Juliana, you really know how to write!" The year was 1981 — before she was so famous — and she was a co-host on a daily Baltimore talk show called People Are Talking. I was a lowly summer intern then, writing questions for author interviews and a precis for each book featured on the show. We both suffered the treachery of a very difficult boss, too, but Oprah's light asides to me made the job bearable.

Besides the fact that Oprah made my day — every day — with a smile of encouragement or a pat on the shoulder, she stormed local TV ratings when her winning personality broke through on the show that summer. Her co-host took a two-week vacation, she moved from second seat to first seat with great success, and soon she was off to Chicago to host her own show. It's 25 years later, and in the same way, Oprah has broken through on the political stage. With Sunday's striking speech, she rallied the crowd like no one else could, for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

According to the Greenville News, former state Democratic party chairman Dick Harpootlian beamed after the rally. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "People will go back to their communities to talk about what they saw here today. It was a big deal. I don't know we'll see anything like it again. It was amazing."

Having Oprah on your side - that's usually a good thing.
