Knock-Knock. Is Denial Here?
Locking truth behind a closed door
After my first session in the office, I called Lynn, the lease-holder for the office (who was busy cashing my rent check), and said, "Girl, I can hear every word of the psychotherapy sessions next door, and so can my clients!"
I waited for her response. She said, "You can? Did you turn on the fountain?" She was referring to a tiny electric thing where a trickle of water fell down pile of fake stones.
"Yes."
Then she asked, "Did you turn on some soft music?"
"Yes."
And finally she asked, "And you could hear them talking next door?"
"Lynn, the last patient was sick of her job, but still has a crush on her boss. Her father-in-law is coming to town next month, and she's fighting with her husband because she wants him to stay in a hotel. Her eczema is flaring up, and her sleeping pills are not working!" I said. "Yes, Lynn, I can hear every word, and my clients complained about it."
"Oh. Really?" said Lynn.
I sighed.
I wish I could say I finished out the week, got my full month's rent money back, and moved on to a quiet new office, but I had clients booked solid for weeks. So, I tried my best to get Lynn and the psychotherapist to put up some material on both sides of the door frame to absorb sound. Numerous attempts to get a response from the psychotherapist alongside numerous opportunities for Lynn to do the job added up to a big dud, nothing but unanswered calls and excuses.
