Living with "Tu Diabetes"

By Juliana Luecking/MOLI

Manny Hernandez turns lemons into lemonade (no sugar added)

If you're looking for inspiration, Manny Hernandez is a shining example of a guy who can turn lemons into lemonade (no sugar added). When diagnosed with diabetes, he started a new health 2.0 social network for people touched by the disease. The electrical engineer turned product manager turned website creator (and MOLI member) created Tu Diabetes and Es Tu Diabetes, a sister site for Spanish speakers. Cultural diversity and Manny's personality warm every page.

(By the way, in case you are wondering what "Tu Diabetes" means, it's a bit of a wordplay: Tu as in Spanish for "Your" but also like "Too" — you too have diabetes — because we are ALL affected by it, directly or indirectly.)

In the middle of one very busy day, Manny made the time to do an e-mail interview with MOLI:

You were diagnosed with diabetes in 2002. What was your life like before your diagnosis, and how is it different now?

I wasn't too careful about what I ate: I was overweight and really enjoyed whatever I felt like eating. Since I got diagnosed, I lost over 20 pounds (which I've kept off), and learned more about the foods I was eating. I became much more conscious about my eating habits and their importance.

In the weeks and months following your diagnosis, where did you look for informational resources, support, and guidance?

I subscribed to Diabetes Forecast, the publication of the American Diabetes Association, and read numerous books, most of which you can find on Best Diabetes Books.
