Video: Wait! Not So Fast

By Juliana Luecking/MOLI

Before these new regulations pass, tell me what you think

After a major public outcry at their first set of proposed regulations for people with hand-held cameras, the NYC Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting (MOFTB) issued a second version of proposed regulations this week. If you're not a lawyer and you read the document closely, you'll pause to wonder a lot. That's what I've done the last few days, so I made this video, "Wait! Not So Fast." There will be a public hearing about the regulations on December 13, but, in the meantime, the office welcomes comments at message@film.nyc.gov.

The videos are funny, because the regulations are so absurd. "Wait! Not So Fast" is the third I've made on the subject, but if you're not familiar with the issue, you also should see the other two: "Wait! What? Get a Permit to Make a Video?" and "Wait! Now What?"

Another good place to get in on the action is Picture New York, where a group of activists and artists have gathered, among other things, 31,000 signatures on a petition against the last set of proposed regulations. You can also download the PDF of the proposed regulations from the mayor's office's press release.

This is all beyond ridiculous! I'm a film maker, and i am very close with many other film makers, and we are all set to leave this shithole of a city. I know i definitely am. NYC is the least film friendly town in the world, by a mile. It makes me sick! Juliana, do you know what the filming laws are in New Jersey, or do you of any site that explains them? Thanks, and keep up what you're doin'. good job.

I would like to know what spawned this - I mean were people with video cameras in NYC really causing that much of a disturbance?

    As you often do.

The 8 foot rule would make a lot of areas impossible to film in. But then if you're talking about handheld cameras, then you're not supposed to need tripod space -- unless you're shooting yourself.

What do you think? The fact that the words, "hand-held camera" are even in the regs is a red flag, right? xo QJ
