When Is a Gesture a Signal?
Actions of an undercover cop vs. actions of a U.S. senator
Airport Officer Dave Karsnia sat in a stall in a men's room at the St. Paul-Minneapolis airport on June 11. (I don't know if Officer Karsnia had his pants up or down, or if anyone I know actually sits on a toilet in a public bathroom, whether they're a cop or not.) According to a police report, he sat there for two minutes as Senator Larry Craig, 62, of Idaho, peeked at him and made lewd gestures. He sat on that toilet for another two minutes while Senator Craig entered the stall next to him, tapped his foot, and edged his shoe over toward Officer Karsnia's feet. Karsnia reports, at that point, "I moved my foot up and down slowly." (Does he mean that as in "up and down" Senator Craig's leg? How strange.)
Then, handsome Officer Karsnia reported, Senator Craig swiped his hand under the stall divider several times. That's when Karsnia held his police identification down by the floor so that Senator Craig could see it and ordered Craig out of his stall. Karsnia escorted Craig to the exit and took him to the Police Operations Center. Craig was photographed, fingerprinted, and released pending formal complaint for Interference with Privacy and Disorderly Conduct.
"Let me be clear, I am not gay, I never have been gay," Senator Craig has announced, repeatedly. He doesn't identify himself as gay, so is he a straight man who loves his wife, has a big sexual appetite, is aroused by strangers, and likes public sex? Is his mind straight, but his penis bisexual? Were his early sexual experiences in public bathrooms, and does he fantasize about those experiences often?
