Discover Your Breast Health

By Juliana Luecking/MOLI

Make an appointment with yourself

Robin Roberts, anchor of ABC's Good Morning America, went home after of a day of work, did a breast self-exam, and discovered a lump. That morning on the show, in a tribute to former colleague Joel Siegel's death from colon cancer, she reported on using early detection methods to survive cancer. Roberts recently announced her breast cancer on Good Morning America and will undergo surgery tomorrow, followed by radiation treatment.

In the spirit of the struggle Robin Roberts is about to take, I encourage each of you, women and men, to go right now to do a refresher on how quick and easy a breast self-exam is. Actually do it, please. I know, you don't have time right now, or this is not the place, so make an appointment with yourself. Will it be the first Sunday of each month during your long, hot shower in the morning?

Worldwide, breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death, but think about it this way: every time you do the self-exam, and you find your breast tissue is healthy and well, you can celebrate! Kick back with a smile and catch a game on TV, call some friends and go to brunch, crack open that new book. I'm serious now, don't just look at the diagram. Bookmark the page. You need to do this.

It's All Flat Now

(I gave a friend several massage therapy sessions as she was recovering from a double-mastectomy. After my first visit, I jotted this down on the number 3 train back to Brooklyn.)
