Go Into the Light

By Theo Kogan/MOLI

A bright light shines in the Bklyn Designs show!

Bklyn Designs, a design show in Brooklyn! Ah yes, I am a Brooklynite and so had to attend, especially since I've been covering more fashion here on MOLI — it was definitely time. Held in four buildings in Dumbo, our Bklyn council member Bill De Blasio welcomed us at the press breakfast (bagels, croissants, and muffins) along with the borough president for as long as I can remember, Marty Markowitz. The designers are all based in Brooklyn, and we like that. A good portion of green items: pieces made of recycled materials, sustainable materials, bamboo, "reclaimed" hardwoods, etc.

Four design-filled venues to peruse through! There were some beautiful furniture pieces: a lot of metal/wood mixtures, some of which looked like super-modern patio furniture, some with an Eastern twist. My faves were Laidman über-comfortable outdoor lounge chairs and loveseats that you'd never know were so cozy if you didn't sit your butt down in them. John Laidman, the designer, encouraged us to test them out. (No one else did.) It was nice to take a load off in sweet wooden comfort.

In another huge space — actually, a big tent — were the show's accessories. Most notable in jewelry was the stingray collection by Lauren Wolf; she casts actual stingray skin in gold and silver (she reuses the same skin, I was glad to hear). Swizzlet was the other standout in jewelry: silver bracelets and pins cast from vintage swizzle sticks and cocktail picks, kitschy and fun. The winner for me in accessories was Sorapot, a teapot like I have never seen. Truly futuristic and beautiful. It's also green, not in color but made from recycled metal and glass by designer Joey Roth.

I love the sting ray jewelry. Someone find me a wife to buy it for me.

Can someone please tell my husband to buy me one of those swizzle cuffs? We used to have a loft in Dumbo, the top of 68 Jay. That rocked!
