There's a ring around the sun today. And I recently got reacquainted with the odd fact that I have an abnormally high IQ, though my friends (hello), might never have known it and might dispute it still. One of the perks is that my awareness of the affliction gives me license to express my ersatz digital A.D.D. Love that word, ersatz. It's like having a white shag rug in your bathroom. Ooh, damp.
I am now living in a sweet little cottage with dropped acoustic tile ceilings and wood paneling on all the walls, and looking for ideas on how to fix the place up. (I thought of collecting a series of Rhino images, printing them on worn out newspaper, and then framing them in a series on the wall, for instance, hence the link above.) Rather than actually do it, I run around the web looking at how other people are doing it. It's boho-modern domestica-porn, but it's all good. So I thought I should share. These are but a few of the daily fixes.
Apartment Therapy's been running it's amazing Small, Cool contest for spaces under 800 feet, having narrowed down a huge field to some great finalists from all over the place. The wrap party's being held at Room & Board in Chicago (a sponsor, and a good one at that). Nothing has done more to give people living in small spaces a shot in the arm. You get to see some really amazing examples, all storage-ated (pronounced: store-age-eated) out to the max, with vertical shelving, racks, closets in surprising places, nooks filled to the brim in attractive ways, double-duty furniture, space-making visual tricks, soothing colors and books stacked vertically (definitely a trend) and stuff you just never thought of. The Janssen family is taking their step-smaller-across-the- earth edit so seriously that they've taken over an RV, powered it on veggie oil, and are driving across the country with their three year old girl. Almost scary, how good they are. But if they can do that, we can all do something.
