Ebay vs. Craigslist

By Jana Martin/MOLI

Kijiji, by the way, is Ebay too

In the annals of used furniture and your cousin's old leather jacket, as well as goats, fake Elvis memorabilia, and electric guitars, Ebay is suing Craigslist. Ebay, a shareholder in Craigslist, is suing to protect its investment. It's a minority shareholder. Craigslist says, "Aw come on, you giant auction universe, this is silly."

Ebay says Craigslist is cutting into its profits, which may be true, but selling a chair on Craigslist is a lot easier than auctioning a chair on Ebay, and considering the intense culture surrounding Ebay (power sellers unite over your mallomars and cokes), it can be a lot more laid back. It can also be annoying: for the one person that really wants that chair, there will be some 25 callers who sort of do, and it can be a huge waste of time.

Regardless, people into reusing, repurposing, recycling all the stuff of our domestic spheres use both. But Craigslist is a lot friendlier. Kijiji, by the way, may appear to be just like Craigslist, but it's owned by Ebay. Is that like buying "organic" at Wal-Mart?

In honor of Craigslist, here's a quick smattering of great furniture and miscellany offered today:

In Toronto, Ontario: lovely Ikea square table and great modern chairs in a pale wood — great to mix into traditional furnishings and even better as a Swedish-modern addition to a retro home. And cheap as lunch.

In London, England: unbelievable Normandy armoire in solid oak with iron hardware, made in 1850 "for a marriage," in perfect condition. Not for the price of lunch (unless you're Trump or Jay-Z), but the sellers are friendly and sign their ad "Best Regards."

That's a great story. I sold a bookcase in an hour, but a table in 3 weeks. So average it out...

My fave craigslist story is selling a surfboard to a woman who recently moved from Malibu to Brooklyn. I listed it on a Saturday, and she bought it on Monday for my asking price. Surf's up, Baby! xo QJ
