Interior Design Tips
From Myrna Martin as told to her daughter and her friends
Abstract painter and consummate urbanite and modernist, my mother once dyed an entire meal blue rather than deal with the clashing oranges and greens and reds one more night. She was always giving my friends and I unforgettable design advice.
Q: I have a really cool old dining table but I hate the idea of antique chairs because I can't afford anything real, and I don't like antique reproductions because they look cheesy, and it might be cool to kind of mix it up with something kind of modern. Any advice? — Terry, Syracuse, NY
A: If you want a great modern chair to mix with the table that's really inexpensive and comfortable, try director's chairs — a '70s classic. Don't pay a lot for them, whatever you do. And if you can get ones with a black or white frame that will look more modern. They should be low-priced, since they're essentially a few sticks and some cloth, right? And you can change their appearance by buying different seats and backs, and if the seats wear out (which they won't under normal circumstances, if you know what I mean), you can simply replace them. And if you have a dinner guest that's kind of short and you don't want to make them feel like a child (unless they're acting like one, in which case, do whatever you want), you can put a nice pillow on the seat, or a folded quilt, so long as it matches the color of the chair.
