This Is a Test

By Theo Kogan/MOLI

And we're back with more on the brilliant designer Todd Thomas

Aaaaand we're back with more on the brilliant designer Todd Thomas. To refresh your memory, on Tuesday, we talked with Todd Thomas, a New York designer who has dressed Cindy Sherman, Debbie Harry, the Scissor Sisters, and yours truly, to name a few. Tests such as the SAT, Gestalt, and the infamous inkblot Rorschach tests inspired his Spring 2008 Collection.

THEO: Okay, so tell me about your work with Cindy Sherman; that must have been exciting!. She is one of my favorite artists!

I did the costumes for Cindy's film Office Killer, in 1997. The tagline was: "Working here can be murder." But on the contrary, working with her was quite inspirational. It was great to be a part of that: The entire crew banded together to create something very Sherman-esque. The film was a sort of a sleeper and met with mixed reviews. I did watch it again recently, and I was happy to see it stood the test of time and really had improved over the years. Cindy's been so sweet and very supportive since then. I made a couple of great close friends from that project.

I see that your new designs are inspired by various tests and test taking — please describe.

Yeah. Full Gestalt. It started with the textile design, based on various psychological tests: Rorschach, Gestalt, and SATs.
