Get Your Gunz

By Theo Kogan/MOLI

Violent objects make their way into design and fashion

What is it about guns, grenades, and sharp objects that are so alluring aside from the obvious, danger? Perhaps the actual shape is pleasing to us in its horror? Especially when it's gold or metallic and lighting up a room, neck, wrists, fingers, or ears.

I have been a lover of peace at heart always, even when I have been at my most brutish. I have also shot guns, and honestly, it freaks me out. That a tiny (and sometimes not so tiny) bullet with that pressure and speed has all the power (in the wrong hands) to end yours or anyone's life — that's not really something I want to play with. Yet, in toys and jewelry and even home furnishing, I love it!

There has always been something about a tiny gun or knife; it's just so adorable! Even the cocktail sword, in its neon joy stabbed through an olive or sandwich, gets me so tickled. (I used to wear tiny cocktail swords through my ears even.) Which brings me to the most probable reason for this obsession and its allure so many times over: It's punk! Wearing safety pins, and anything really including cocktail swords, in your ears just felt right! Me and my friends also wore sporks collected from the cafeteria, bought illegal brass knuckles for jewelry, and wore plastic toy guns, bullet belts, and handcuffs. Just noting the roots, here. I do like to get to the bottom of things.

And punk has once again gone fancy!

You betcha! You can acquire the sparkly and softer side of an ice-pick knife necklace, swords, or M262 grenade-launcher machine-gun necklaces by NY designer BiJules.

And here's a real pretty gun and dagger necklace by Erica Weiner; it looks quite delicate!

Ow - that one hurt! So sharp objects OK, but explosive ones are off-limits?

That's an awesome gift because it's pirate-like. And we know how much you love booty. (Ba dum bum.)

I agree with J. I don't like it when punks or rappers glamorize violence. That said, current MOLI star Laura Quinlan gave me a silver cocktail sword pendant for my 40th birthday that's the best bling ever!

I just can't get with this. Perhaps I've watched too many episodes of "The First 48," but I don't like looking at guns. I guess that's the point, to flip the image on its head or whatever, but I just don't like it. However, when I was little, I LOVED getting a sandwich in the diner because it came with the little cocktail swords. Mmm sandwich.
