Screening for Freaks

By Theo Kogan/MOLI

THEOlogy helps an online dater sift through the weirdos

Dear Theo,

I'm trying online dating. I need three good date ideas. Ideally, these would be under the half-hour mark and would not involve alcohol. Also, how do you screen for freaks? Any suggestions for questions that would lead to "clear giveaway" signs that someone is not right in the head?

Thanks,

Nice Normal Chick

Dear Nice Normal Chick,

Sounds like you've had some real "fun" times with online dating. Here are four date ideas not involving alcohol. And remember, it's not rocket science here.

  1. How about going to have coffee? The very polar opposite of booze, and not a beverage that usually leads to sexy times (although it certainly could), coffee also sure can get you talking.
  2. A "quick lunch" — unless you are a drinking-at-lunch kind of a gal, in which case I'd say go to a spot where they don't serve alcohol.
  3. Book shopping or grocery shopping could be fun and also very telling about a person, as well as fast — although the bad lighting in a supermarket is often not so appealing.
  4. Take a walk, as corny as it sounds, in a park or in a cute neighborhood. If it goes well, you could extend the date, or if not, you could just jet and they will never know where you live.

Screening for freaks

I always prefer being blunt. How about writing in your computer dating profile(s) something like "No Freaks" or "If you have a history of mental illness, don't contact me." You may cut yourself off from some interesting people in the process, but you may also rid yourself of the real kooks.

As for screening questions, again, I am in favor of bluntness.

Alcohol can help - but I suggest leaving it at one drink. However, sometimes letting yourself feel nervous can be fun.

So basically, Ev, you're saying that you're easy. That's hot.

Well, I do have to say that sometimes booze is a useful social lubricant, helping you get past the jitters to that first kiss.
