Fashion Brings out Stars

By Jana Martin/MOLI

Here come the warm jets, it's that time again

Friday the forecast was for an icy mix of wintry mess outside but a blast of sunshine inside, as around and about the tents at Bryant Park, Fashion Week kicked off its bi-seasonal megawattage display. One note: There seems to be more celebrities, so they gush, than ever before. Why? The writers' strike. Stars have nothing to do. Fantastic, said the PR teams, we'll make you a deal. And since the fashion world has to eat too (kind of), if star power can give the tents a shot in the money arm, good for us.

Day one has become a red ritual, as the Heart's Truth Red Dress Collection with genuine real women proves there's no better reason to put on a red dress than to save women's lives. So cool and girlish Erin Fetherston hit the Promenade later that evening. Starry Sass & Bide served edgy style for dinner.

There was powerhouse Diane Von Furstenberg on Sunday (teatime in the Tent): DVF is such a major mover in the industry that despite my reservations about her original, iconic dresses, I've come to see her as a kind of Dame Von Fashionista. Plus she's leading the charge against riotous mass-market copycatting, which I think is a good thing. It may be a bit of a high road, but whatever art is in fashion needs to be protected.

MOLI's great Tertiary crew is doing the video crawl with Fashiontribes' peripatetic Lesley as well as meself (running hither in red brocade). Watch for our exclusive on globalicious Ports 1961 (hitting the runway sometime at 5 today). And as they say everywhere except at the buffet tables this week, a whole lot more.
