Holiday Pop-Up Store!

By Jana Martin/MOLI

Why end the gifting streak when there's a new store in town?

In its cheerful quest for world domination, MOLI has developed its own city of stores. Some of them I've covered, like the amazing soaps, the beautificious bags. And oh, if chocolate were a design element, I'd be all over the Endangered Species folks. Then Wendy over on Arts & Entertainment street let the Horshack out of the bag: Among our brethren is Ron Palillo, who played Horshack in the '70s hit TV show Welcome Back Kotter. Turns out Ron's acting and artistic abilities extend a lot farther than his honking laugh and Brooklynese comebacks. And you can let the world know by wearing a T-shirt with an illustration by him on it, available at MOLI's own Holiday Pop-Up Shop.

I often talk to indie shopkeepers about just why they carry the stuff they do. Here, the answer seems like a mixed bag: There was a little apartment party you "popped up" to visit, then things got interesting; first the trannie neighbors came, then they invited their friends from the boxing club down the shtreet. And before you know it, the music's pounding, the DJ's playing Peaches and flouncing around in Heatherette, someone slipped a Mickey in your Florida orange juice, and you're talking to the guy who played Horshack on TV a million years ago, and he's really smart and a whole lot cuter in person.
