Hi-Fashion on Speed
A line around the block for Saturday's Style Wars launch
I get to Don Hill's for Saturday's launch of the Style Wars Battle Championship tour just past 10 p.m., and there is a line around the block! I haven't seen such we-have -to-get-there-early excitement in a long time. It's obvious that people are anticipating a spectacle. I get to go in before the doors open and inside there's an air of quiet yet frantic pre-show electricity. Two garment racks are set on either side of the stage full of fabric and clothes, patiently waiting.
12:15 a.m. The House of Diehl's MJ Diehl and Roman Milisic, Style Wars creators and also tonight's MCs, open the show with a couture gothic/vampiric look created in a whirlwind five minutes from two black umbrellas. Their expertise and passion for this are real. Their model struts down the runway. The crowd screams in approval.
MJ and Roman explain the rules of the Battle:
Contestants must use ONLY what is on the stage racks, nothing of their own.
It's about, style, execution, and the final design, and of course, performance!
The celebrity and industry judges decide who wins each round: Casey Spooner of Fischerspooner, Joseph Quartana of boutique Seven New York (who disappeared before the Battles began), Bronques of Lastnightsparty.com, celebrity stylist Alexander Allen, and Out magazine's editor-in-chief Aarn Hicklin.
There's a $500 cash prize.
Music is blasting. It's D.I.Y. hi-fashion on speed, and in some cases, more like crack. The closer to the stage, the better; the more crack you get to see!
A House in this case is like a fashion gang, usually led by one. Think couture rap battles, or the film Warriors, or voguing in a delinquent art school.
