Lacy in Wonderland, Part 2
The continuing profile on the marvelous Lacy Barry
The Rest of the 48 Things You Should Know (and Ask) About Lacy Barry the Founder and Designer of Ephoe, a Couture Label and Tailoring Studio Recently of London and Now Based in Los Angeles,
as of a Week Ago
In part one of our profile of Lacy Barry, I looked for her in London and finally found her in Los Angeles. She'd left the Dickensian solace and grit of London for the wide-open sunshine of Los Angeles—and for someone's open arms as well. We carried on via email, then cell-phone. Herewith, part two of her wonderful story (so far):
32. She emailed, And through the romantics of suffering, and creating then accomplishing etc., I did meet someone who I unexpectedly fell in love with. I was impressed by his past projects and how his art was so much who he was, similar to who I was. So after a year in London, a very grounding short trip home and many drunken heartsick nights, I decided to stop going it alone, and allow the companionship side a little consistent nourishment.
33. There is nothing slapdash about Lacy Barry. She is a person who focuses on things stitch by stitch. And it began to occur to me that this was why there was no hastily fit collection; no sophomoric follow-up; no clutching at the brass ring of a Barney's deal. She has her own vision and sense of her place in the world. While in London, heartsick or not, she did her homework. She absorbed the architecture, which she says inspires her more than most designers do, except perhaps for Alexander McQueen and Dame Vivienne Westwood. And how did they inspire her? They made an empire out of nothing. They made an empire out of plaid and wit.
