What do the Paris Hilton sex tape and The Ultimate Ultimate Challenge/Starvation Island (a Survivor-like reality show which never saw the light of day) have in common? They're both produced by the notorious Kevin Blatt. Ah yes, who better to produce a reality show that ultimately ends with the winner eating another human being than a B-list porn producer. American Cannibal is a docu-drama that follows two writers as they pitch idea after idea only to discover that integrity doesn't always pay the bills. So, they take the beaten path and choose to pitch reality television ideas to network executives. They quickly realize they're at the bottom of the totem pole when they end up pitching to Kevin Blatt. The end result: An attempt to shoot a pilot that is based on a joke pitch. (Contestants think they are going to be on a show called Starvation Island...turns out, it's called American Cannibal. As you can imagine, mayhem ensues.) This "documentary" has moments that are captivating, and other moments that are cheap but entertaining nonetheless. (Which may be a social statement in itself.) The film weaves reality and fiction in such a way that you're left scratching your head, asking what is real and what is scripted. Call it a social experiment or an intellectual commentary on the idea of reality television and the entertainment industry as a whole. But how far is too far? When will we say enough is enough? Co-Directors Perry Grebin and Michael Nigro have made a mildly entertaining documentary that will play with your mind and leave you wanting answers. American Cannibal will surely feed the appetite of an American audience who secretly lusts for cheap, sensational reality TV. You can see for yourself when it opens nationwide, March 16th.Read more
