"Semi-Pro" = Semi-Lame
Why? Why, why, why is Will Ferrell still making movies?
Can someone please explain to me the allure of Will Ferrell? Yes, I saw the SNL "cowbell" sketch — and yes, it was funny. But that was because of Christopher Walken, folks — not the bloated, hairy, belly-baring Ferrell. In fact, did Ferrell ever produce a single standout character during his seven years as an SNL cast member? If you say "James Lipton," I'll know you're reaching.
Before I get too crazy with the Ferrell-bashing, let me just say that I thought Blades of Glory, Ferrell's figure-skating comedy with Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder, was effin' hilarious. There seemed to be a genuine chemistry between the two of them — supported by a reasonably funny script, some great cinematography, and heaps of jaw-droppingly ghastly costuming. It seemed, for me anyway, a ray of light in my efforts to understand why this guy continues to have a movie career.
But Ferrell's latest sports-themed comedy, Semi-Pro, pairs the actor with fellow not-so-funny man Woody Harrelson (in his most loathsome character yet), for a double bummer about two anger-management-challenged losers trying to carry a broke-ass, Flint, Michigan, ABA basketball team (the "Flint Tropics") to the NBA in 1976 — the final year of the real ABA.
