Jane off the Chain

By Wendy Case/MOLI

NBC washes Jane Fonda's mouth out with soap

Y'know, America can be a very confusing place sometimes. As CBS gears up for its premier of Dexter (a TV show about a serial killer that murders serial killers), and South Park hones its legacy of hamsters-up-the-bum humor, I wonder what could possibly qualify as "off-limits" material for modern television these days.

Now I know.

When septuagenarian fox Jane Fonda dropped the C-bomb on the Today show yesterday, you'd think that the gates of hell had sprung open and threatened to suck Meredith Vieira, Matt Lauer, and the entire NBC network into its gaping, fiery maw. Oh the horror! Three clicks away you can watch The Girls Next Door rub their naked silicone jugs all over 81-year-old Hugh Hefner, but god forbid that a euphemism for female genitalia be uttered on broadcast television.

I love the fact that Hanoi Jane, now a confirmed Christian, can still get a rise out of people. But it irks me that the tools at NBC would invite Fonda on their show to promote her role in the upcoming 10th Anniversary performance of The Vagina Monologues (Eve Ensler's revolutionary play that, among other things, addresses issues of rape and domestic violence) and then crucify her for mentioning the very body part that they are there to discuss. Characterizing Fonda's word choice as "a slip" (um, didn't look like a slip to me), Vieira went on the air moments later to apologize for the actress and NBC.

While I would hesitate to apply the phrase "class act" to Ms. Fonda, I can't believe anyone has the time to get upset about this.

Oh the power of words, and oh-oh, the power of women when they use empowering words ... we need to take over. Now.

Great piece....stilll laughing at your ending. It's definitely not one of my favorite words, but you have a point...based on every other thing that we're aloud to hear!

It would have better if she had said "crunt," which is my favorite euphemism. Does theFCC have a standard that addresses the other, 'r'-less C-word?
