Awards Show Showdown

By Wendy Case/MOLI

Hollywood's awards show season stymied by WGA strike

Dana "Queen Latifah" Owens's job hosting the 34th Annual People's Choice Awards just got a little easier.

Scheduled to air January 8 on CBS, the normally "live" broadcast, which allows fans to pick their favorite film, music, and television achievements and stars via the Internet, will be reformatted and prerecorded to eliminate fears of stars ditching the show in support of the Writers Guild of America strike.

Though Owens won't have to muster the glib razzle-dazzle that normally goes along with being a "live" awards show host, it's difficult to say what she will be mustering. The WGA has barred its members from writing any material for the show. In fact, for as long as the strike (now in its seventh week) is active, writers are prevented from participating in any of the major awards shows — including the upcoming Golden Globes and Academy Awards ceremonies.

WGA members are also strongly urging actors to stay away from the shows until the strike is resolved so, whether the shows air or not, fans will have to do without the popular red-carpet ceremony.

"It's unfortunate, because it's a celebration of people's talent, but it's also promotional for the studios that are treating us unfairly," guild member Steven Paul Leiva told the Associated Press yesterday. "If we could shut down the awards shows, that would be great. Actors should definitely not cross picket lines."
