Ch Ch Ch Chia!

By Wendy Case/MOLI

25 years of a peculiar holiday tradition

If you receive a fruitcake, a holiday-themed tie, or a Clapper® this year, chances are good that you were at the bottom of someone's Christmas list. But nothing screams I BLEW OFF MY HOLIDAY SHOPPING like that mother of all Christmas kitsch, the Chia Pet.

Unwrapping a Chia Head, Chia Herb Garden, or the classic (reintroduced for the Chia Pet's 25th Anniversary) Chia Ram generally provokes one of two responses: forced mirth or feigned gratitude. But there can be no doubt that the "pottery that grows" (introduced in 1982 by San Francisco novelty company Johnson Enterprises, Inc.) has carved out a unique place in American holiday culture.

Mister T, Homer Simpson, Taz, and Elmer Fudd have all been a part of the ever-evolving cast of Chia characters, but the classic Chia commercial — fueled by the most infectious jingle of all time — has remained virtually unchanged since its inception. But that doesn't mean that the Chia isn't full of surprises. A recent study published in Diabetes Care revealed that 3.5 ounces of Chia seed (from the Salvia Hispanica plant) has as much iron as five cups of raw spinach, as much calcium as three cups of milk, and the same amount of omega-3s as 28 ounces of salmon. Delicious.

I had one. My cat ate the Chia plant. The end.

I've never had a Chia pet, but I've always been fascinated by them.

While I absolutely despise that ji-ji-jingle, I know it like the back of my hand. I hope I don't see any plants coming my way this year!
