Rage Against the Machine
Josh Homme's got no love for the man
How does Queens of the Stone Age main man Josh Homme feel about his band's major-label status?
CRABBY!
The singer/songwriter/testy redhead spared the weak and eviscerated the powerful in a recent tirade against his label, Interscope. The story, dubbed Interscope Sucks My Dick, appears in the December issue of online music magazine Antiquiet.
"F#%& the labels man, they suck," says Homme, in the rant. "The last thing they're stripping down is their own expense accounts and shit. I mean, Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records takes a private jet or rides first class to tell a band they don't get tour support. [Ed: Tour support basically means label-funded tour accommodations that allow bands to do things like sleep in hotel rooms instead of on floors.] You know what I mean? F#%& that shit, I'm tired of it. And I'm not gonna be quiet because the American label, not Canada, not Europe, but our American label's f#$%ing us like crazy, so f#$% them."
I know what you're thinking: Homme signed the contract with his own bare hands, so what's he whining about? Which prompts me to link you to that most venerated of all rock-biz texts, Steve Albini's The Problem With Music. Our business writer, Richard Pachter, already invoked it once this year but, in my mind, you can never study it enough. Although it was scribed in 1994, you can bet your last shriveled dollar that it's even more relevant today.
