3-D Revolution
The bold new look of a kitschy old idea
Wired magazine reports that "nearly every major studio" has a 3-D project scheduled for 2008-2009 release and, according to Fox co-chair Jim Gianopulos, the new technology represents "a bigger quantum leap than talkies ... a complete transformation of the medium."
Using motion-capture techniques combined with stereo digital projection, the new 3-D still requires glasses for viewing, but the problems of keeping the effect consistent and in focus (a chronic issue with old-school 3-D) has been eliminated. Combine this with spectacular modern-day f/x and animation, and you've got full-throttle cinematic entertainment.
With the popularity of home entertainment systems, rental outfits like Netflix, and the constantly evolving video-game market, the cinema biz is up against the wall. 3-D is the big hope of studio execs and movie houses that want to bring audiences back to the theater.
"This is the first thing I've ever seen that is an actual opportunity for the movie business to become something completely new and unreplicatable [sic] at home," DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told Variety magazine. The box-office powerhouse behind animated hits like Shrek and Bee Movie, DreamWorks' entire release schedule for 2009 will be in 3-D.
