The Career Ender
Britney's feckless farewell
Truer words were never spoken. What goes up, must come down – and pop tart Britney Spears came down with a thud at MTV's Video Music Awards last night.
In a way, Spears's tired, flabby dance routine, which opened the two-hour broadcast, was an indictment of what's become of popular entertainment in general. It's pretty much like this: As Britney's confidence has waned, so has the size of her costume. And there's nothing quite as desperate as a faded showgirl trying to cram her mature (and plastic surgery-enhanced) physique into a bikini made for a 12-year-old.
Lip-synching to her panting, horny new single, "Gimme More," Spears seemed about as genuine as Alberto Gonzales. Gimme more what — McDonalds? When you've built the foundation of your career on being a sexed-up teenage lust object, you must work like a Trojan to evolve (like Madonna), or be ready to cash it in when you age out. America would be perfectly willing to accept the former pop idol as a chain-smoking, fast-food-gobbling mother of two — but the one thing it won't accept is anything over 2 percent body fat. While Spears, by normal standards, is at a perfectly healthy weight, she will forever be measured against the teenage sex-tease personae that made a generation of pre-teen girls wile away their days dreaming of breast implants. For all intents and purposes, Britney started this mess. It seems strangely fitting that she should succumb, in such a public way, to its insatiable demands.
