Luxurious Listening

By Wendy Case/MOLI

Internet radio station's fab, offbeat fare

It only takes a few minutes of conversation with Becky Ebenkamp before you start to get the picture: While the other little girls in the neighborhood were playing dress up and cramming Malibu Barbie into her plastic dune buggy, you can be sure that Ebenkamp was planted deep in the shag carpeting with a portable turntable by her side, ogling 45s by Paper Lace and the Ohio Express.

"A lot of times, when people use the word ‘bubblegum,' they mean it in a derogatory way," says Ebenkamp, now 43, from her L.A. home. "But a lot of it was really great music with the best producers, the best singers, and the best songwriters – they picked the best people!"

Her enthusiasm for, and historical knowledge of, '60s and '70s AM radio greats like Tony Burrows and the 1910 Fruitgum Company (she contributed heavily to the book Bubblegum Music Is the Naked Truth) made Ebenkamp a natural choice when oddball Internet radio sensation Luxuriamusic.com started recruiting talent for its 2006 relaunch.

"I was DJing somewhere in L.A. and I'd sent out an email asking people to come down" to the station, she says. "One of the people I sent it to was one of the guys who was running Luxuria. I think he just thought, 'You know what? We need some girl DJs — and Becky has the weird records [laughs].'"

I was that 45-collecting girl. Thanks for pointing out this cool radio station. I remember the Millionaire when he was in Christmas.
