The Unstoppable Miss Alex White

By Wendy Case/MOLI. Photo by Patrick Pantano

White is quickly becoming the golden child of Chi-town

Miss Alex White is the hottest thing to hit Chicago since, ummm, a certain fire? With a natural screaming red coif that would have made the collective members of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience drool with afro envy, White is quickly becoming the Rickenbacker-slinging golden child of indie rock in Chi-town. When I first encountered the singer/songwriter years ago in a band called The Hot Machines (with Jared Gummera of The Ponys), her onstage charisma and the intensity/maturity of her spare, aggressive songs bowled me over.
She was just a teenager then – but already a fascinating character. I bumped into White recently at Chicago's Subterranean nightclub and, during a brief chat, discovered that she and her current band, The Red Orchestra, have just returned home from their first ever full European tour. Check out this live vid, shot on a tour stop in Stuttgart, Germany, last month and be sure to pick up Miss Alex White and The Red Orchestra's latest, Space & Time. It just came out July 17 on In The Red Records.
Greetings, MOLI members — Wendy Case, new arts and entertainment contributing editor here, checking in on the first of what will be a Monday thru Friday ritual whereby I dig through our modern culture like Liz Taylor digs through a sale at Tiffany's: unearthing fabulous treasures designed to inspire, shock and astound and casting aside those that might clutter your gorgeous cranium. Fortunately for you and I, the fine folks at MOLI have a pretty broad notion of what constitutes "arts and entertainment." So get your clicker finger ready as we go see what's out there. I'll be cruising the MOLI community to see what y'all are up to in the coming weeks and look forward to your tips, suggestions, and various transmissions.
