WORLD RECORD

About Kevin Young

View Profile

Kevin Young

Growing up inner city, Watts, California, Kevin never imagined himself as an athletic icon, especially in track and field. However, in high school after joining the track and field team, it was clear that Kevin had the talent for speed and agility. In the 1992 Barcelona Olympic games, Kevin earned a gold medal and became the new world record holder for the 400m hurdles at 46.78 seconds. After mental and physical preparation for the Barcelona Olympic games, Kevin knew he could focus on the goal and beat the 11-year standing world record for the 400m hurdles. 15 years later, his world record still holds at 46.78 seconds. Kevin Young was also just recently inducted into the Track and Field Hall of Fame in New York.

The Fall of the Tour of France
By Donnell Alexander/MOLI

This morning in Madrid, cycling champion Alberto Contador held a press conference that may have offered final evidence that the professional version of his sport has jumped the shark. Cycling has devolved to the point where its signature race calls to mind performance-enhancing drugs more than it does pedaling across European vistas.

World Dyno Record Broken Twice
Courtesy of Climber Magazine

Skyler Weekes from Denver traveled to the United Kingdom specifically gunning for the five-year-old record leap of 2.6 meters. On July 14, at a competition during the Cliffhanger sports festival in Sheffield, England, Weekes jumped 2.625 meters from twin handholds to a finishing jug. That's more than eight and a half feet in the air.

"Official" dyno contests are held on a 20-degree overhanging wall, starting with twin large handholds and a ladder of identical footholds. Contestants leap up and left at a 45-degree angle to catch a jug that is moved progressively farther from the left starting hold. They have to latch the jug with both hands for the dyno to count.

The Final Barry Reference
By Donnell Alexander/MOLI

If — after this posting — I ever again type the word "Bonds" for non-personal consumption, you best believe my writing has taken a turn toward financial reporting. Similar promises have come out of my mouth before, but this time I mean them. Barry Bonds hit No. 756 today. It's in the unspoken Sportswriter's Code that today we all have to write about the San Francisco home run king.
